ART in Iowa! Last week I attended 'State of the Arts Des Moines' at the DSM Social Club. At the end of this meeting an age old quote rang loud in my head. Mahatma Gandi said..."Be the change that you wish to see in the world." The discussion in the basement of the DSM Social Club centered around "community" and "individual intent." Just before my son and I headed out, one passionate comment rang out..."If you want community to support you, you need to be your community!" The long and short of this shared thought was, if your a artist, teacher, director, ect... go to ALL events you can get your hands on...not just exhibits or events of friends or events your "comfortable" going to. Get outside your "neighborhood." It was so common sense, but fear, lack of resources, learned behavior, social norms, cliques and so much more often gets in our way of being the change we want. I told myself, you will do this! And it has been a great start :)
So, to continue this change I am excited to finally share this work with you. In June of this year I submitted this original mural concept for the Iowa State Fair mural call. Though I was not the selected artist, an amazing female artist, Karen Doty, was! I can't wait to support Karen and watch her do her thing, painting live at the Iowa State Fair in the Ag Building!
