Commissioned by the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, Future explores representation, opportunity, and the power of collective investment in people and place. Developed through community engagement and research into the legacies of Evelyn K. Davis and J. Barry Griswell, the mural considers how education, homeownership, entrepreneurship, accessibility, and community leadership shape pathways toward a more equitable future.

Layering portraits, symbolic landscape, and cultural references, the mural celebrates working families, Black homeownership, correctional education and reentry, disability inclusion, mentorship, and the expression of identity through hair, dress, and tradition. Lush green foliage evokes renewal and possibility, while references to Kente cloth, graduation stoles, prosthetic innovation, and community partnerships speak to resilience, achievement, and self-determination. Created for a highly visible civic corridor, Future transforms public space into a shared vision of belonging—one that honors lived experience while imagining what is still possible.
